In the past 8 years since I have been involved with training programs I always have those people who join because they want to lose some weight.  I believe that getting involved in a training program is a great step in doing something for your health and taking control of your wellness, however, running or walking and weight loss do not always go hand in hand.  You need to exercise and eat in moderation, runners and walkers can be very bad a the second part of that equation.

It usually works like this. You begin the program and are getting to know your group mates.  After a couple of weeks you all decide to go out after the workout for something to eat. In your head the thought process goes like this “I have just worked out, we ran 4 miles tonight, I am really hungry, haven’t eaten since lunch and deserve to fill up”.  You proceed to order a burger, fries and maybe a couple of beers.  This continues every week and you start to gain weight instead of lose it and you just don’t understand.

Nothing is wrong with going out and grabbing a bite to eat with  your group, the key is to remember that for the every mile you run, you only burn about 100 calories.  (Yeah, I was very bummed when I realized that for the first time too….)  The math is easy to do, you ran 4 miles – there is 400 calories, the burger, fries and couple of beers probably add up to 800-1000 calories.  It is fine and fun to go out with your new group, just keep in mind that to lose weight you need to watch your calories. The most important thing in weight loss is controlling how many calories you consume.  Less calories plus working out plus staying hydrated is a good equation for weight loss.

Everything in moderation is the way to go.  By continuing to workout, and eating sensibly, you have a better chance to lose that weight, and you will make a positive impact on your health and your lifestyle.
