We have all seen those people out running or walking while “plugged in”, with headphones on, totally tuned into what they are listening too. We pass them on the trail where we holler “runner back” to have them jump out of their skin and shout “you scared me”.  Many people like to listen to music for motivation, you can even download specific playlists for any type of workout you want to do.

I am not telling you that running or walking with headphones is right or wrong, but want to give you some things to consider.

Safety – it is hard to be aware of your surroundings when you can’t hear what’s behind you.  You always need to pay attention whether you are on a trail or the sidewalk. You may also miss hearing that bike or another runner/walker come up behind you. An idea would be to only wear one earphone to keep your other ear open to the sounds.

Community – when you run or walk with others it is probably best to leave the headphones at home.  No one wants to repeat their whole conversation because one person can’t hear due to their head phones. If you are with a group, enjoy their pleasant conversation, it will make the time go quickly.

Races – some don’t allow you to wear headphones so you may want to check what the race website says about using them.

I do wear headphones when I am running or walking on a treadmill, however, there is no one trying to pass me, I am not running with a group or I don’t have to worry about cars.

It’s your choice, to wear headphones or not, please be aware of your surrounding and considerate of those around you.
